A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE STARTIN FAMILY

According to one story Startins originally hail from the Scottish village of Stirton near present-day St. Andrews, the Startin name presumably took its present spelling circa 1688. The family moved south to England between 1770 and 1800 and settled in Staffordshire in the West Midlands, primarily in a town called Barton. This account is not universally accepted by Startins in the UK, but there is definitely a link to the West Midlands area.

Towards the mid-19th Century many family members appear to have filtered into the major English cities, particularly nearby Birmingham. A certain Thomas Startin became a well-known hearse builder in the Victorian Era while at least one other family member earned a knighthood.

Many Startins in the United States appear to be descended from another Thomas Startin (almost certainly not the hearse builder), born in 1826 in Wolverhampton and my great-great-great grandfather. This Thomas Startin and his family emigrated shortly before the Civil War, became active in the Mormon Church and by 1880 had settled in Provo, Utah.

Today Startins continue to live primarily in the western United States and the West Midlands of Great Britain, although the name can be found throughout the English-speaking world.
