ENDORSED
BY CITIZENS AGAINST YUCCA MOUNTAIN
NO ON QUESTION 2 – YES ON
QUESTION 9

STATEMENT
BY LANE STARTIN ON THE PASSAGE OF S.J. RES 34 ON YUCCA
MOUNTAIN
Today 60 members of the United States Senate put
political expediency ahead of science and the wishes of the people of
Nevada and voted to effectively override our state's veto of the
proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste depository. This action will
have profound consequences nationwide as nuclear waste will be
shipped through virtually every part of the country to be stored
there.
It goes without saying that simply moving these
materials exponentially increases the chances of an accident
involving radioactive waste not only in Nevada, but in many other
states as well. Even if the waste does arrive in Nevada without
incident, there is no guarantee a mishap at the site won't
catastrophically alter the very nature of southern Nevada forever. If
President Bush and members of Congress are so intent on fighting
terrorism, why then do they support a plan that gives terrorists a
golden opportunity to strike with every shipment?
This cannot
stand. I support any and all attempts by the state and its citizens
to block further action on Yucca Mountain.
STATEMENT BY
CHARLES LAWS, GREEN PARTY
OF NEVADA CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR, ON S.J. RES 34 ON YUCCA MOUNTAIN
The Senate voted to support the nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. This does not end the battle. It defines the war.
As long as any plant operates, and years after they all close, there will be on-site storage, no reduction in sites or potential disasters. Shipment of wastes brings the war against terrorism to our roads and cities.
This Senate vote and subsequent DOE action will benefit terrorists more than citizens. Terrorists will be directly provided with greater access to the wastes. They will be given opportunity for enormous civil disruption. Each shipment will have to be a fully armed military operation.
War has been declared. This one to be fought on American soil against American people.
DOE
and Congressional action decreases national security and aids and
abets the terrorists with whom the executive branch of U.S.
Government has declared we are at war.
Isn't there a law
against that kind of behavior?
Even
if there weren't, Nevadans could win the battle by physically,
aggressively, allowing no dumping and force the industry and DOE to
consider what they are doing, and keep their wastes at home and off
the roads. Waste production must stop.
