STATEMENT BY LANE STARTIN, 2002 GREEN CANDIDATE FOR
US HOUSE OF
21 November 2001
I have just been informed
that my Congressional campaign has overwhelmingly won a vote of confidence
among members of the Green Party of Nevada in light of my recent comments
publicly yet cautiously supporting military action in Afghanistan.
Consequently, I’m announcing the immediate resumption of my activities in the
Green Party, inclusive of my campaign for US House in the Nevada 1st
Congressional District. I’m glad this ordeal is over.
I think Nevada Greens made
a very important statement that transcends the mere approval of my campaign to
date. They sent a very clear message to Nevada voters, the nation as a whole
and to Green Party activists worldwide that those with differing opinions –
even on obviously important issues such as this one – can and will be accepted
into the larger Green movement. I believe Nevada Greens said “yes” to building
a truly broad-based, progressive political party in the Silver State. It is a
fitting affirmation of the populist principles and Western sense of
independence I hold so dear. I’m deeply honored.
I want to make clear that
this vote should in no way be construed as a nomination. It is no substitute
for the formal nomination process prescribed by the Green Party of Nevada
bylaws. I will stand for nomination with all other Green candidates at our convention
in spring 2002 and accept that decision as binding. I thank Genelle Baltutis
and the Green Party of Nevada Executive Council for fairly conducting such an
important vote on very short notice. I also thank everyone who voted, including
those who voted against me.
Now let’s get to work.
